This is a Social Studies lesson for second grade. One of the Common Core State Standards for second grade is how people and groups have made a difference in society. The objective of the lesson is how people in history made a difference in their community and how students can make a difference in their own classroom, school, and community. The students will learn about Ruby Bridges and how she impacted her community by being brave and being the first colored person to go to an all white school. The students will partake in different activities that positively influence their school and local communities. At the end of the Ubd Unit there will be a Community Night where parents, students, and those in the community are welcome to attend!

Lesson Development
Day 1
What is a community? How can I help my community?
As a whole group, students will brainstorm what good deeds there are to help a community Have each student write on a notecard one good deed of what they can do in the classroom (ex. Sharpen a classmates pencil)
Have students switch notecards with a classmate
Day 2
Assembly: Food Share comes to school and talks about food bank
Write a class thank you note to those who came and spoke
Day 3
Was anyone able to complete his or her notecard? If yes, how did it make you feel to help someone else? Now lets look at helping a community on a larger scale--our school. How can we make a difference or help our school?
As a whole class make a list on the board
Day 4
Implement good deeds brainstormed yesterday into school
* Have students make posters to post around the school (ex. Keeping the school clean, being kind to others, lending a helping hand)*Go around the school and have the students hang their posters
Day 5
Discuss as a class what the students have learned or new ideas that have interested them
Read the book on the community
Discuss with students
Day 6
Make a list on the smartboard of ways they can help their community
Discuss things the students have already done or new things they could try
Students will draw & create a picture of a community project they could do--pictures will be hung around the classroom
Day 7
Lesson on Ruby Bridges
Read the book Ruby Bridges
Show students picture of Ruby Bridges & have them write post it notes of descriptive words & what they see in the painting
Students will reinact the book in the classroom--Assign roles & start brainstorming ideas
Have students watch video below
Day 8
Students will practice the skit of the book
Teacher will provide pieces of clothing & props if students want to dress up
Day 9
Students will perform the skit to the teacher and other school personel
Afterwards students will reflect in journals using the genre of their choice
Some ideas to reflect on are the character they played, how they felt being treated, what they learned, what is important about having a compassionate community
Day 10
Community Family Night
We will have different community projects for people of all ages to partake in (blanket making & rice pilaf)
